Prism Health North Texas offers:
Outreach and Education
Teaching the community about HIV, how to stay HIV negative, and how to lead a healthier life with HIV.
Staff is available to give education to the community about HIV, hepatitis, and other sexually transmitted diseases. This can include information about safe sex and correct condom use. If you would like someone to come and speak at your organization or community event please contact us at 214-521-5191.
Testing - For HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis C
Did you know…sexually active people should get an HIV test every year and if you engage in high risk behaviors, you should get tested every 3 to 6 months?
You can get tested at Trinity Health and Wellness Center for HIV, syphilis and hepatitis C. We also do HIV testing at many places in the community during evenings and weekends. Check our calendar for more details.
These tests are FREE and confidential.
You must be 13 years of age or older to be tested here. Parental consent is not required.
When you first arrive you will be greeted by the receptionist and given a simple form to fill out. To get tested, you need to provide some information about yourself and sign a consent form. Trained Risk Reduction Specialists (Testers) will do the test and talk with you about your risk for HIV and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). The testing is done in a private space.
WHAT TO BRING
Just bring yourself – we do not need any documents or ID.
Monday through Friday from 8:30 am-11:30 am and 1:00 pm-4:30 pm. No appointment is needed, just walk in. Getting tested takes 15-30 minutes.
WHAT TO SAY
Be honest with your Tester. S/he is there to hear your concerns about your sexual health and to provide education and support. The conversation between you and the Tester is confidential.
The results of your test can take up to 7 days to be returned. At that the time the Tester will call to let you know that your results have been received. You will need to come back to get the results in person. Results cannot be given over the phone.
You can get free condoms and lube at Prism Health North Texas and other places. We have different colors, brands, flavors, and sizes!
HIV Testing At Home
Have you taken an at-home HIV test? Do you have questions about your results and what to do next? Prism Health North Texas can help!
If the result of your at-home test is positive, you will need a second confirmatory test to confirm your test result. Come into Prism Health North Texas for your free, confidential follow up test.
- It is important to avoid any activity that could expose someone else to the HIV until you know your status for sure. Blood, semen, vaginal fluids, and breast milk of an HIV infected person can transmit the virus. [Link to a continuum of HIV risk graphic]
If the result of your at-home test is negative, you should be aware that an initial negative does not mean that you absolutely do not have HIV.
- You could be in what is called the “window period.” The window period is when a person has been infected with HIV but HIV tests cannot yet detect the infection. It can take up to 3 months after an exposure for the person to test positive with an at home HIV test.
Testing regularly – at least yearly – is highly recommended. In addition, routinely using condoms correctly every time you have sex, not sharing needles, and encouraging others to do the same, will help stop the spread of HIV.
Counseling – Helping you understand and reduce high risk behavior
Comprehensive Risk Counseling Services (CRCS)
Are you HIV positive?
Do you want to know how to:
- Reduce your risk of getting STD’s (sexually transmitted diseases)?
- Have fun safe sex?
- Lower your risk for using drugs?
- Reduce your risk of spreading HIV?
Our CRCS program is for people living with HIV/AIDS and can help you become safer by working with you one-on-one. CRCS counselors can help identify what puts you at risk for getting other STD’s and/or potentially transmitting HIV to others you care about. Next you and your CRCS counselor will set goals and develop creative ways to reduce those risk behaviors. CRCS services are free and confidential and you can even get incentives for successful goal achievement! Call 214-521-5191 for more information.
